This recording is an introduction to Lighthouse Health & Safety (LHS) Podcast. It is an educational workplace health and safety (WHS) channel, presented by industry veterans, who explain in simple terms the "what is what" of WHS and how you can get better outcomes for both employers and workers, whilst avoiding misinformation and many other pitfalls along the way.
In this recording, I explain what we do well in modern day WHS practice and where we (as a profession) are allowing it to go well off-track, which is a great disservice to the multitude of working men and women counting on us for professional support. This episode concludes with some strategic and practical tips on how we can get the 'WHS Train' back on track and move the profession forward.
In this recording, I explain what Workplace Culture is and the correct way to develop it, through established common values. I also provide an introduction to behaviour-based safety (BBS), as a powerful tool (if used correctly) to drive desirable safe behaviours, and finish with examples of impactful BBS conversations I have had in the field during my career.
In this recording, I explain the hierarchy of WHS legislation in Australia, provide an introduction to the WHS Act 2020 and explain how to demonstrate that risks have been reduced so far as is reasonably practicable (SFAIRP). I conclude with a case study of H.W. Johns Manville Company with a reminder that all businesses are ultimately accountable to the laws of tomorrow. Enjoy!
In this recording, I explain how to develop a world-class risk-based mental health program. I call it The Right Way to Wellbeing. This program is unique. You will not find another like it in the world, because it draws on my experience as a former WHS Inspector, WHS Risk Manager, Industrial Hygienist and Martial Artist to create a mental health program that actually protects people from harm and supports self-perpetuating healing.
In this recording, I explain the critical relevance of ego to mental health risk management and explain that if you want sustainable mental health, you must invest in understanding ego and how to effectively manage it. This foundational podcast is based on my 20+ years studying and teaching Japanese sword arts and is a necessary prequel to my next episode, which will explore how we can all develop advanced resilience.
In this recording, I explain that the psychology-based conventional resilience thinking we have all come to accept for decades now is totally inadequate to ensure the sustainable health and wellbeing of our communities. What's missing, you ask? Quite simply, the current approach lacks wisdom and doesn't reflect strategic risk-based thinking. Yes, this is a bold statement to make, so now I must put my "money" where my mouth is.
This podcast is the first in my technical reference series, and today it's all about Heat Stress Management. Heat Stress is a killer. Make no mistake about it, and as we enter the harsh Australian summer of 2025, I'm presenting this material to enhance your understanding of the risk it poses to our workforce, particularly those working in hot environments and/ or performing very manually-intensive work. In it, I explain the differences between Heat Stress and Heat Strain and provide examples of pragmatic controls that really do work in the field.
This podcast is part of my technical reference series, and it's all about Fatigue Management. In it, I explain the primary causes of fatigue; provide an introduction to the body's circadian rhythm, where I discuss the best times of the day to schedule safety critical work activities, and discuss the importance of the key neurotransmitters serotonin, melatonin, caffeine and adenosine in regulating your alertness, happiness and sleep quality.
In this episode, I discuss the unique concept of noise exposure, as defined in Australian WHS law and explain clearly why earmuffs and earplugs do not reduce a person's noise exposure. YES, you heard that correctly. Your exposure with or without personal hearing protectors (PHP) is the same! If you don't believe me, then this episode is for you.
